Acrylic on canvas – 2002. Caroline wanted to simply paint a woman putting on a sari – though the painting evolved into a woman transforming into an angel. The more she worked, the more the figure resembled Sungita, Caroline’s cousin’s wife who had recently died of cancer. An extract from a poem is found on the bottom left edge of the painting. It describes a being that is neither in heaven nor on earth – she is like the fragrance of a flower or a word in a piece of poetry. The extract is in Gujarati, in Caroline’s father’s handwriting. For her, the poem clearly describes the emotion of the painting and the beauty of Sungita.
