Mixed media on canvas – 2003. This painting makes reference to the Swadhishtana Chakra which is located in the spleen and is linked to creativity and self-belief.
In this work, Caroline combines an image of the Virgin Mary in traditional Indian dress. She is accepting a lily from the Archangel Gabriel who appears in greeting to Mary on the right hand side. The lily symbolises purity and her acceptance of her fate. The Hindu god Vishnu stands guard on the left in his first incarnation, Matsya, whose avatar, or bodily manifestation, was the fish. This brings to mind the Christian symbolism of the fish which represents Christ. Incorporated within this work are Sanskrit letters, the orange Chakra symbol (centered around the spleen), the eye of God and the mandorla (almond shape) around the Virgin.
