Hey, Welcome to Mango Mosaics.

Caroline Jariwala is a painter, visiting lecturer, exhibitions organiser and community artist. Caroline’s intensely coloured paintings describe a personal interpretation of Italian Renaissance art with Hindu iconography. Caroline’s Mango Mosaics uses the picassiette method of old, chipped and discarded crockery celebrating a new sense of joyful beauty.

Since qualifying as a teacher in 1990, she has worked on projects in schools, art galleries and community venues. Her experience covers a wide range of art forms, such as illustration, batik, mural and mosaic.

Since 1986 she has exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions. Jariwala’s work features in databases and directories, ALISS, Birmingham Education Arts Forum, Directory of Cultural Contacts (Arts Council), AAVAA (African and Asian Visual Arts Archive), AXIS and The Art House.

Sep 2016	Mosaics, The Coach House Gallery, Winterbourne House & Gardens, Birmingham	A solo exhibition of my mosaics panels. I was an informal artist in residence at the Coach House Gallery where it gave an opportunity to meet and greet visitors. (see more)
Jul – Oct 2016	Hampton Court Palace, London	A community project involving fifteen sculptures celebrating the 500th anniversary of the palace will be created. I collaborated with Trinjan Women’s Social Group from Hounslow (my hometown!) to create ideas and designs for our sculpture. I was commissioned by Hampton Court Palace and Wild in Art to mosaic the figure from the participants’ inspirations from their visits to the amazing venue. (see more)
Jun 2016	Yardley Wood Community Primary School, Birmingham	I was invited, once again, to work with the lovely pupils at Yardley Wood Community Primary School, Birmingham. This time we created a 100 x 2 ft foot long mosaic on external marine ply for the playground wall. The theme was Fantastic Flowers!!! (see more)
Feb 2016	Gurgaon, India	My mosaic friend, Kanika Singh and I were commissioned to create a large mosaic for the school boundary wall in DLF 5 area in Gurgaon, Delhi. We worked on 3 x 12ft cm fibre-glass mesh, ceramic tiles, glass and crockery. The work was created to showcase our work for future projects in Delhi. (see more)
Aug – Sep 2015	Inside/Out, Crypt of St Martin’s in the Field, London	The Inside Out / Outside in Exhibition was a thought-provoking exhibition by myself and two other Quaker female artists. Featuring human landscapes, the exhibition provided an opportunity to depict, show and open dialogue around shared spiritual journeys. (see more)
Jul – Sep 2015	The Big Hoot, Birmingham	I have been commissioned by Birmingham Children’s Services to create a mosaic Owl for The Big Hoot. The Big Hoot is a fund raiser for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. I had initially worked with four Young People groups during the design process. I incorporated their designs, and also involved them in the mosaic making in May/June. I worked on the mosaic in my studio and at Birmingham City Council Offices. The Owls are on public display from July to the end of September 2015. (see more)
May 2015	International Festival of Glass 2015, Ruskin Glass Centre, S’Bridge	I have been commissioned to create a collaborative external mosaic mural, with glass artist, Keith Brockelhurst and pupils from Ruskin Glass Centre. The mosaic mural will be created during the International Festival of Glass Ruskin Glass Centre in May 2015. These pieces will form part of the drop-in mosaic workshop. This project is part of the South Asian Arts Festival Alchemy, funded by the Arts Council and Black Country Touring (see more)
Dec 2004 – Apr 2005	Cartwright Hall Art Gallery Bradford	I was commissioned by Cartwright Hall to create a dance floor inspired by the V&A Museum touring exhibition Radiant Buddha. In addition I worked with St Joseph’s Catholic College, Hollingwood Primary and Parkside Primary School from the Transcultural Gallery, Cartwright Hall’s collection of contemporary South Asian British arts. The school’s work was the basis of three 5ft square dance floors painted at each school. It was from these designs that gave me the inspiration for the commissioned dance floor. The piece measures 22 x 15ft. It will be used in a variety of arts settings in the Yorkshire and Humberside region.
Oct 2002	National Rail Museum York	This two day event, supported by East Lancashire Excellence Cluster, aimed to provide a showcase of artists who work in primary and secondary schools in the Burnley area. As a result of the two day workshops I was invited to four further schools in the Burnley area. Part of the national The Big Draw 2002 – Campaign for Drawing. Visitors to the museum’s Great Hall were invited to explore through drawing the vast collection at NRM. Individual drawings were added to a huge eight by four foot collage within an outline of the infamous Mallard. The success of the project was rewarded by receiving a runners up prize at The Drawing Inspiration Awards 2002 presented by Quentine Blake at The National Gallery, London on Wednesday 30 April 2003.
Jul 2002	Impact Summer School Project Sandwell & Dudley Area	This government funded project involved twelve artists to work in twelve schools in the Sandwell and Dudley area. Year 5/6 students and parents from Halesowen C of E Primary School created two mosaics inspired by a visit to the Red House Glass Cone in Stourbridge.
Jun 2002	Mid Pennine Art Gallery Burnley	This two day event, supported by East Lancashire Excellence Cluster, aimed to provide a showcase of artists who work in primary and secondary schools in the Burnley area. As a result of the two day workshops I was invited to four further schools in the Burnley area
May 2002	Handsworth Wood Girls’ School Birmingham	Following a successful mural project at the school in 2001, I was commissioned to make works for the school foyer. The paintings encapsulated the cultural diversity of the school using dance and decorative designs from around the world.
Jan 2000	Buttershaw Upper School Bradford	Funded by Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford and Excellence in the Cities (EiC). GCSE students drew inspiration from a large still life set up. Drawings provided a basis for innovative mixed media paintings on board. The work was exhibited at Cartwright Hall as part of Gifted & Talented and Excellence in the Cities.

Sep – Dec 1999	Wetherby Wall Hanging project Wetherby	A local history project, funded by Leeds Artists into Schools, this project involved the four primary schools in Wetherby and pupils researched events, characters and landmarks in the Wetherby area. Their drawings were the basis for the batik designs, along with the school emblems incorporating sequins, beads, fabric glitter and embroidery threads in the completed four by eight foot wall hanging. The piece is now permanently displayed at Wetherby Town Hall.
Mar 1999	Victoria Park School Leeds	Nineteen murals were completed after a five week period working on this project with sculptor, Shane Green. Shane worked with year 9/10 students to create wooden reliefs from railway sleepers and these works are now displayed in the school’s courtyard. Working from Asafo flags from Ghana, Africa, the students produced drawings and paintings influenced by these decorative compositions. It was from their work that I drew up the designs for the nineteen murals produced.
Jan – Mar 1997	Accrington & Rossendale College	Funded by Mid Pennine Arts, Burnley, this residency culminated in the production of an eight by thirteen foot ceramic wall mural representing a celebration of the cultural diversity of Accrington and Rossendale College. Students from a number of courses worked with myself and tile maker Penny Hampson, employing innovative design and ceramic techniques. This piece is now situated at the New Era Centre, Blackburn which was officially opened by HRH Princess Anne on Friday 9 March 2001.
1995 -1996	Mai Habar Vocational Training Centre for Disbled, Eritrea, North East Africa	In the role of art teacher and development worker, during my year as a VSO volunteer in Eritrea, I curated several exhibitions, established community links to undertake commissions and organised work experience placements that led the students to income generating ventures and I also contributed to setting up the first Art & Design course in Eritrea since independence.
Jan – Mar 1992	City Museum & Art Gallery Stroke on Trent	As part of my residency at the gallery, I initiated a large scale painting project inspired by rangoli wall and floor decorations from Indian folk art. The four day holiday activity involved participants drawing and painting within fifteen foot square sheets of paper. Sixteen paintings were created and displayed in the Sculpture Court in the final exhibition.
